14 Months
Oh my funny boy. The other morning you were in bed with us and you decided you wanted to get out. You scooted to the edge of the bed and got off "feet first" and walked to the door. You stopped, turned and waved bye to us before you headed out the door. Your dad and I just sat there amazed at you. You really cracked us up. You are finally waving more too which is great.
Today I told you we were going out and you went over to the key rack, grabbed a set of keys, walked to the front door, tried to put your key against the door knob and get out.
You say "go" now as well when you want to go out the door. Every day it's something new Alec. You continue to amaze me!
Your current fascination is buses. We live right next to a middle school and you love to go outside and watch the school buses. You stand in the side yard yelling "buh". And when we are driving around town you are always on the lookout for a bus and you get so excited when you finally see one.
You are still fascinated with ducks and birds. Now whenever we see the lake you start yelling "duh duck" because you know that is where the ducks live. I truly find your mind a fascinating thing.
You don't say dog as much as you say "oof oof" whenever you see one - either in real life, TV or in a book. You get so upset when we see one in real life and you don't get to touch it. I feel guilty Maverick no longer lives with us. You would love him so!
My baby is gone and there is this huge boy in its place. Oh Alec, you are all grown up. You are thinning out, your rolls are shrinking and your legs are getting muscles form all the walking and now even sort of running you are doing.
You are a funny kid. The strangest things strike you as funny and if you get started laughing it takes awhile for you to stop, and then you start getting overly silly and falling into giggle fits.
You like to walk everywhere now and you are really good at it. You are even almost running now! The only problem is you don't like to hold our hands when we are out - which you really need to do! You will push at my hand with your free hand and wiggle your other one free. If I hold on, you get really angry, shriek and sit down so we can't go anywhere. Such a stubborn kid!
We had our Spring Children's picnic on the 3rd. And of course it was cold and windy here! But we still had fun. You really liked the plastic croquet mallet and were running all around trying to hit balls with it. MOst of the other kids were 20 months and up to 3 years but you just mixed it right in with them - you have no fear. Plus you are so big, you are almost their size! It's hard because even though you are so big, you are still such a baby in many ways.
Your cool new thing is that you shake your head yes. More like your whole upper torso shakes. It is so funny. And your head shaking is so deliberate and serious. It makes me laugh all the time. It is as if you are saying "yes Mom, I'd like more please." Love it.
Alec, you have rhythm! Well sort of. You have this new dance you do when music is on. You sort of stand there and lift your right foot up and down - sort of like tapping. I think it's your Irish roots :) Then sometimes you bounce up and down by squatting - you love your music!
You love to read about cows in books. When you see the you get so excited and go "oooooo" which I think is for Moo. When we were driving to Mimi's in the car you would look for them out the window yelling "oooooo" but when you wouldn't see them you'd be sad and go "uh-oh" but when you did see them you would get all excited and start babbling"oooooooohooohohhoh"
You have completely perfected the wave now. And you have added"bye" and "hi" to your ever growing vocabulary as well. So now when you are ready to leave somewhere you start waving and say bye!
You Mimi and Grandad took you to your first amusement park last weekend (5/10). You loved all the people and kids. You weren't sure about the driving cars at first but then you warmed up. You were confused that you had to stay seated the whole time and couldn't get out of the car and go play in the other ones while the ride was moving! You really didn't like the carousel at all, but loved the train ride. And you love fair food just like your mom - especially potato pancakes!
Your Grandad bought you a lawn mower named "Big Mike" just like dad! It is a crazy thing that makes all sorts of "vroom vroom" noises and says crazy things like "we can mow it!" or "your grass is too hard" Crazy! An it has teeth! But you love it, and I am actually quite afraid it will become your attachment object!
Alec you just love your Mimi! You get so excited when you see her and burst into tears every time she leaves the room. You don't want mom at all when she is around. It makes me sad :(
You play peekaboo now. Except you aren't quite sure where your eyes are. Sometimes you cover your head instead of your eyes with your hands, or sometimes your cheeks. It just makes me laugh and laugh. And last night at the restaurant we went to to celebrate Dad finishing his first year of b-school, you had a grand time playing peekaboo behind your napkin. I love this age!
You definitely express your wants and needs these days. Be it through, pointing, your words, tantrums, etc. Your newest thing is when you want to watch TV, you go and climb into your rocking chair and just sit there and look at the TV until I put it on for you. Then you get all excited and clap, so happy I understood you!
You bring us lots of books to read these days. You come over, hand us the book and say "uh uh" which I guess means read :) THen when we say "Do you want to read the book?" Your whole body nods yes to us. So funny.
You talk so much now Alec, we are amazed every day. You now say "cheesh" for cheese, "fish" for your fish crackers. When we go to the grocery store you say "hi" and "bye" to everyone as we pass them in the cart. But if anyone tries to say hi to you, you clam up.
You say "yesh" now for yes - accompanied by your whole body nodding yes, it cracks us up completely.
You are getting more agile, today at the park you were able to climb up the steps to the slide by yourself, and you can slide by yourself now too. You run now, well sort of a run, maybe a fast walk. Belly first, plowing the way!
I swear you said Mall today. We pulled into the mall parking lot and I said, "Alec we're at the mall." And you nodded and said "Maaal" You must be a born shopper like your mother!
So your words to date (5/21) seem to be "mama, dada, yes, more, home, duck, cat, woof woof, mall, cheese, drink, book, ball, bottle, keys, this, bus, park, go, hi, bye" And the ever present "unh unh" to signify something you want.
Alec, you gave me your first unsolicited kiss today. You will usually ask for a kiss or lean in for one when your dad and I are kissing - you never want to be left out. But today I was just sitting there and you cam up out of nowhere and kissed me on the cheek. Then you went on your merry way to play. I just completely melted. It was one of the sweetest moments of my life. You are just such a sweet gentle soul. Then later in the day when I left to go do some errands, you blew me kisses. You put your hand to your mouth and went "mwa mwa" Love it!
You zerbert my belly! It is so funny, and you really make a lot of noise when you do it. Not to mention the drool!
You have entered the "naming" phase. You point at everything and say "this" - and you want me to tell you its name. And when I do you get so excited, nod your head and I assume store it always for future knowledge.
You are currently fascinated by this collage frame I made of you of your Sears portraits from your first year. You are constantly pointing to it saying this. When I say where is Alec - you point to it!
You really play games now. You love peekaboo and are doing better at finding your eyes. You also love to sing "If you're happy and you know it...." You clap your hands, pat your head, rub your belly, and wiggle your tongue.
While dad is off of school for a bit we have been trying to do some day hikes. It's tough work for dad carrying all 30 pounds of you on his back but he's a trooper. You love being up in the pack so high. Though lately you seem to be trying to climb up dad's back and out. You'll also pat his head a lot which I am not sure he is that fond of!
